The party needs one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b60OZhrTB6o . *grins* We'd be able to build as many forts as we felt like!

Though, in retrospect, we could have just used our helmets and armour as shovels when we were escorting Georg through the forest - Knifey, Ivelliohn, and Tosscobble all have helmets as part of their chain shirts, and Erak is wearing plate armour i.e. 20 shovels tied together. It pays to think outside the box like that. There's also a sweet Ranger/Druid spell that magically turns the natural landscape into fortifications (Nature's Rampart).

Ahah! The item of my dreams, at last! The Armband of Reduction - shrinks a person by a size or two. Now John will be able to have a riding dog as his mount! I think it was in either the Complete Adventurer or The Arms and Equipment Guide. I'll have to find it again.

Don't worry Minh, I'm sure the party rolled Oskar's head out into the orc plains so it could deteriorate in peace and vulgarity.

You know, I never knew how Knifey came to join the party. I assume he overheard them talking to Ironheim and was all like 'CAN I COME TOO?!'

The party gave it to Eric Ironhide (a dwarf they found in the Village of Newkeep who wished to accompany the party on their quest)

I was about to ask how you got mithral armour, and then I realised you said mithral shirt. AND THAT'S another thing I want to get eventually, some mithral armour of some kind...but right now I don't really need it.

Tosscobble, as a person without a Ring of Sustenance, remember you are going to need to have food on your person. In the equipment pdf, down in the, ah, section with the bedrolls and backpacks, it should say something about rations you can buy. You will need to spend some money on those.

Also, yes, a spyglass would be a nice thing to have. I assume it would give some benefits, or at least William might go easier on the spot rolls, ahaha!

Character Equipment Empty My equipment so far

Post  Milo 'Nesquik' Tosscobble Tue Jan 29, 2013 9:06 am

I had a chat to Mr DM-ears last night about equipment and decided on a +1 Rapier (+1 to attack and damage) and a +1 mithril shirt (like a chain shirt, but with +1 AC, +6 max dex bonus, no armour check penalty and the ability to be easily concealed behind clothes), along with a masterwork short-sword I get as my starting bonus thing.

I haven't had a great look into other equipment, but i have 1,300 gold left, so I may stock up quite well on cure light wounds potions. Alternatively, I could get a dire weasel as a pet, but I'm not sure exactly what benefits it gives me, especially without any ranks in Handle Animal (though i could easily change that later)

A Spyglass (1000gp) might also be useful for the Party to have for long distance spotting.

Ah, I see now William. Thanks for clearing that up. I misread the section - it will be cool to get once I've finally amassed the finances. Oh well, at least this now frees up 2000gp or so to use on something else! Pack of riding dogs, here I come... *grins* (kidding. Probably a bit too outrageous?)

You're thinking very far ahead in terms of equipment, which is good but remember that we all have limited amount of money to spend, and in the end there are some things we need to buy before others. However, it'll be handy to have things we might want to spend money on later.

As for me, I'm going to have to buy things later in the game that make me stronger/faster/stealthier, because apparently the Soulknife is considered a broken class -cries-, so I'd like to keep buffing myself up as much as possible.

As for what you should buy, well I think the Ring of Sustenance would be a good idea. I'm going to get one myself, so that I'll be able to roll that concentration roll for psionically focusing after my nightwatch without having to go back to sleep, and also so I don't have to eat after the first week.

Composite longbow sounds good, THOUGH I HAD TO MODIFY THIS PART because apparently you can't have the enchantments?

The Quiver also sounds pretty useful. Hm, but I can see your problem. All this stuff is so expensive. Well, put it this way, after I've bought what I need, and we've pitched in our share for the mules and their saddles and barding and feed, I'll be willing to pitch in some extra money to buy something for you.

I mean, like I said, even if I buy all my stuff, including little things for my profession(artist) for when I put ranks in it, and enchant my armour and buy that ring, I'll still have about 1000 something gp. Some of that will go to the mule, but if I've got stuff left, I'll keep a bit for rations in the first week as well as a bit for myself, and might help you buy something else.

In the end though, remember James, your character doesn't really sleep a lot anyway, so aside from the food thing, the Ring might not actually be the best thing for you. Plus, I don't know how many people are going to get getting it. Yes, I know I said earlier on it'd be useful for us, but now that I really think, rations aren't too expensive, I think, and you don't sleep much anyway...

EDIT: (well apparently you can't get it, dang it, but I'll leave this part of my message here anyway...) I'd definitely say get the longbow with an enchantment thing (Flaming or Seeking) on it, as well as maybe the quiver, or the braces of armour, or the bag of goofy animals, ahaha. I don't think we need to worry about the bags for extra stuff right now in the quest, to be honest, but later on we should consider purchasing one. I reckon you should skip out on the telekinesis stuff, and probably the more expensive armour thing, as you aren't a front row fighter -just stay safe behind me and it'll all be good, JUST DON'T GET ME IN THE BACK-.

Oh wow, wait, I think I've uncovered the secret of why Seeking is useful. You won't hit any of us, ahaha.

Currently, I have bought:
-breastplate (200gp), to be enchanted for 1000gp (+1 armour, and magic armour is masterwork, so apparently -1 to armour penalties)
-heavy steel shield (20gp)
-explorer's outfit (free)
-backpack (2gp)
-tent (10gp)
-waterskin (1gp)
-flint and steel (1gp)
-cold weather outfit (8gp, so I'm prepared for winter)
-winter blanket (5sp, same note as above)
-bedroll (1sp)
-Probably a bit of parchment and either chalk or ink (for my Profession if I put ranks into it, as mentioned above)
-Probably a Ring of Sustenance
-Probably a weeks worth of rations
-AND my share of the mule payment, barding, saddlebags, and feed

(Note: My Profession is now full, but I still have two free Crafting spots, and since I don't really care what they become at this point, if anyone has a request for them, just tell me. Like, if you want me to be a Bowmaker or something, just tell me and I'll put it down. I haven't got any ranks in either Craft or Profession right now though, ahaha!)

Sadly James you have misunderstood how enchanted weapons work. on the table where it list the properties (ie seeking, flaming etc,) the Base Price Modifier is a listing of the price augmentation. So first note that all magic items need to be at least +1 (this also includes masterworks though the +1 AB does not stack). So lets consider your Composite Longbow (+1) with flame; Composite Longbow (100gp), +1 enchant and Flaming means it has an effective bonus of +2 (8000gp) meaning said longbow would cost 8100gp (way over your spending limit and your total gold).

That said many of you other suggestions are very good (though bag of tricks has a rather limited application)

Hope this helps

Hello everyone, particularly the DM!

I'm wondering what would be most useful to my character, as a Ranger with the possibility of multi-classing to Druid, out of these Magic Items:

Composite Longbow (+1) - Flaming (an extra 1d6 flame damage) or Seeking (never miss the target, but still have to beat its Armour Class). Both have + 1 to hit and + 1 damage, with up to + 1 more damage from my strength modifier. - 2500GP.

Heward's Handy Haversack - extra dimensional storage of up to 2+8 cubic feat or 20+80lbs, never weighs more than 5lbs, move action to draw something from it never provokes an attack of opportunity - 2000GP

Hand of the Mage - unlimited use of 5lb telekinesis spell - 900GP

Ring of Sustenance - after a week of wearing, no need for food, and only needs 2 hours of sleep - 2500GP

Quiver of Elhonna - extra dimensional storage of up to 60 arrow-, 18 javelin-, and 3 bow- shaped objects. Never weighs more than 2lbs. - 1800gp

Bag of Tricks, Gray - summon for 10 minutes a random choice of badger, weasel, bat, rat, or cat, up to 10 times a week, and have them obey according to the Handle Animal Skill - 900gp

Bracers of Armour +1 - boosts armour class - 1000gp

Amulet of Natural Armour +1 - boosts armour class, even in wild shape - 2000gp
......................

The Party should also probably get a Bag of Holding - extra dimensional storage of up to 250lb non-sharp objects, never weighing more than 15lbs - 2500GP, as this will allow us to take our valuable equipment with us rather than leaving it on mules or in wagons or at random inns.

Additionally, throughout the party we should probably pick up some other useful Magic Items, like the Hat of Disguise (instant disguise, without needing to use the spell). Everyone should also look into spending any left over gold on wands or scrolls or potions or elixirs of useful spells and effects. Never know when they could be handy, and the Spellcasters mightn't have prepared those spells ahead of time when we need them on the spur of the moment. These can be found in the Dungeon Master's Guide (look on scribd).

And we need to figure out who's paying for the Mounts and their associated gear, including some saddles (military (for riding horses etc.), pack (for carrying our stuff), and exotic - in case I ever meet a Hippogriff or something to tame.)

Ivelliohn the Ranger
